There’s more than meets the eye
At our weekly Q&A on Tuesday, we explored a powerful truth: looks can be deceiving, especially in swimming.
It’s easy to assume a long, graceful stroke means efficiency or that choppy movements signal struggle. But the water tells a different story. A swimmer who looks smooth might be leaking power in invisible ways, while someone with an unconventional stroke might be moving through the water with surprising ease.
The real difference isn’t in how a stroke, a movement, or a hand appears—it’s in the unseen forces at play: how momentum is carried, where energy is lost or preserved, and why connection matters.
Yet, we compare. We copy. We chase someone else’s stroke, training, or definition of success—forgetting that their body, strengths, and journey aren’t ours.
Why? Because we crave external validation. We want proof that we’re doing it “right,” that we measure up, that we belong. But the water doesn’t reward appearances—it responds to what actually works. And when we focus on how things look instead of how they function, we miss out on the deeper progress that truly makes us better.
I spent years making this mistake myself; I’m human after all. We’re wired for social connection. That’s why we come together at The Water’s Edge—to go beyond superficial success, ask better questions, and train for real progress instead of just looking the part. Because this isn’t just about swimming. This tension between appearance and effectiveness extends far beyond the pool—it reflects a fundamental human struggle between seeking external validation and trusting our authentic experience. Chasing the illusion of “doing it right” by someone else’s standards—keeps us stuck in cycles of comparison, second-guessing, and never quite feeling enough.
The real breakthroughs happen when we stop performing for others and start tuning in to what truly works for us. Surrounded and supported by others on the same path.
If you’re ready to break free and train for real, lasting progress—both in the water and in life—join me on my journey. Let’s move with more ease, more purpose, and on our own terms. Join the movement.
